Installed Capacity of Solar Power in India to Witness Robust Volume Growth
The Indian wind power market is poised for significant growth, driven by improving power infrastructure, availability of land, private investments, and increasing captive use of electricity. As the country looks to transition towards cleaner energy sources, wind power is emerging as a key segment in India's renewable energy landscape. The government has undertaken several initiatives to promote wind energy, including setting up the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) to drive development. With a vast coastline of over 7,500 kilometers, India has immense potential for offshore wind energy, and the formation of the Offshore Wind Energy Steering Committee in 2012 further solidifies the country’s commitment to harnessing this potential. In the 12th Five-Year Plan, the Indian government set ambitious targets to add 18.5 GW of renewable energy, with 11 GW coming from wind power. This highlights the growing role of wind energy in India’s power generation mix as the country moves away from its heavy dependence on non-renewable sources, which constituted 88% of the energy mix in 2014.

The market is segmented by type, with onshore and offshore wind energy being the primary categories. Onshore wind power currently dominates due to its lower cost of installation and easier implementation. States like Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Karnataka have been at the forefront of onshore wind energy generation, with Tamil Nadu leading in repowering potential with over 800 MW. Offshore wind power is still in the early stages of development in India, but with strong government support and favorable wind conditions along the coastline, it is expected to gain traction in the coming years. The central government’s push for repowering old wind farms is further expected to enhance efficiency and boost installed capacity.

By application, wind power is utilized across various sectors, including commercial, industrial, and residential segments. The industrial sector is the largest consumer, leveraging wind energy for captive power generation to reduce dependency on conventional sources and ensure a steady power supply. The commercial sector, including large enterprises and business parks, is increasingly adopting wind power to meet sustainability goals. Residential applications are limited but growing, particularly in rural areas and small-scale projects that utilize decentralized wind energy solutions.

The market is also categorized by end users, comprising utilities, independent power producers (IPPs), and private industries. Utilities play a dominant role, integrating wind power into the national grid to meet the rising electricity demand. Independent power producers are expanding their presence, investing heavily in wind farms to capitalize on government incentives and policies promoting renewable energy. Private industries, particularly those in manufacturing and heavy industries, are also investing in wind energy to meet their sustainability targets and reduce long-term energy costs.

India's wind power market is expected to grow at a CAGR of over 13% in the coming years, with states like Gujarat and Rajasthan emerging as preferred destinations for new wind energy projects. While Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra have shown signs of saturation, Andhra Pradesh is rapidly increasing its wind energy installations and aims to become a renewable energy hub in the next four years. With strong policy support, technological advancements, and increasing private sector participation, the Indian wind power market is set to play a crucial role in the country's transition toward a sustainable energy future.
