Nestle, widely recognized as the maker of Maggi, is expanding beyond its traditional food and
beverage business in India by entering new categories, one of which is
pet care. The company is no longer positioning itself solely as a food brand but is evolving into a broader consumer products company.
According to a recently published report by Bonafide Research, “India Pet Care Market Outlook, 2022”, the Indian pet care market is expected to grow at a CAGR of more than 20% over the next four years. Factors such as changing lifestyles, rising income levels, the increase in nuclear families, and the growing need for companionship are contributing significantly to this growth. Additionally, trends like the humanization of pets, rapid urbanization, and pets being perceived as status symbols are further driving market expansion. With rising awareness among pet owners about branded pet care offerings, the demand for premium and customized
pet food products has increased, creating immense potential for pet food brands and fueling massive growth during the forecast period.
India is emerging as a key market for pet care, with increasing pet ownership in metropolitan cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore. Established players such as Royal Canin India, Mars International, Cuddle Up Diet, Indian Broiler Group, Venky’s (India), and Bharat International Pet Foods are already operating in this space. The industry is also witnessing the entry of both small startups and large corporations looking to tap into the growing demand. In 2017, Nestl? India announced its foray into pet care as part of a diversification strategy. The company’s decision to expand came after its heavy dependence on Maggi, which remains India’s most popular instant noodle brand. However, after a significant drop in Maggi’s market share due to its recall and ban in 2016 over quality concerns, Nestl? focused on broadening its portfolio. The company has been aggressively launching new products, introducing about 43 different offerings across multiple segments between January 2016 and May 2017. Nestl? aims to continue this expansion strategy in the coming years by entering categories with strong global presence and bringing more international products to the Indian market.
On a global scale, Nestl? SA owns an 80-year-old pet care company, Purina, which offers a wide range of pet products, including dry and wet
dog food,
dog treats, dry and
wet cat food, cat treats, cat litter, and dog litter. These products are sold under well-known brands such as Beneful, Fancy Feast, Friskies, and Purina ONE. The company primarily operates in the dog and cat food segment, where it has a strong market presence worldwide. Nestl? SA had previously test-marketed Purina products in India in the year 2000, and by 2003, they were rolled out in select Indian cities through a sole distributor. However, the business did not perform as expected at that time. Recognizing the vast opportunities that the Indian pet care industry now presents, Nestl? is planning to reintroduce its global pet care portfolio in the country. Pet care is a major revenue segment for Nestl? worldwide, and the company competes closely with Mars International in this space.
The rising popularity of premium and specialized pet food has fueled demand for healthier and more tailored nutrition options for pets. Indian consumers are increasingly seeking high-quality ingredients, grain-free formulations, and organic pet food, which has led to the introduction of global pet food brands in the domestic market. Additionally,
pet healthcare and grooming products are also witnessing a surge in demand, as pet owners are now investing more in
veterinary services,
pet insurance, and grooming solutions.
E-commerce has played a crucial role in making premium pet care products more accessible, with online marketplaces offering a wide range of options at competitive prices.
The Indian pet care market is also witnessing innovations in
pet accessories, hygiene products, and training services, contributing to overall industry growth. Startups focusing on pet wellness, nutrition consulting, and subscription-based pet food services are gaining traction. The rising influence of social media has further amplified pet ownership trends, with an increasing number of pet influencers driving awareness about premium pet care brands.
Major companies operating in the Indian pet care market include Mars International India Private Limited, Venky’s (India) Limited, Royal Canin India Private Limited, Indian Broiler Group, Gitwako Farms India Private Limited, Bharat International Pet Foods Private Limited, Agro Food Industries, Champion Pet Foods, and Provimi
