ECF leads because elemental chlorine-free bleaching uses chlorine dioxide instead of elemental chlorine, allowing producers to achieve high pulp brightness and cleanliness while substantially reducing the formation of chlorinated compounds associated with conventional chlorine bleaching. Elemental chlorine-free, or ECF, bleaching has become the dominant modern bleaching approach for many kraft pulp operations because it provides a practical route to producing bright, clean pulp while avoiding the use of elemental chlorine. In an ECF sequence, chlorine dioxide is the principal chlorine-based bleaching chemical, commonly used alongside oxygen, hydrogen peroxide and alkaline extraction stages depending on the mill's process configuration. Research literature describes ECF bleaching as a globally prevalent technology and identifies chlorine dioxide as its primary bleaching agent. The major technical advantage is that chlorine dioxide is much more selective than elemental chlorine in its reaction with residual lignin, enabling mills to achieve high brightness while substantially reducing the formation of undesirable chlorinated compounds compared with traditional elemental-chlorine bleaching.
