Oats Segment to Lead Growth in India’s Booming Breakfast Market
The increasing demand for health foods, the preference of Indians for hot breakfasts, the entry of well-known players into the category, and the rising popularity of instant savory oats are key drivers behind the growth of the oats market in India. The oat, sometimes referred to as the common oat, is a cereal grain cultivated for its seed, which is known by the same name. Oats derive part of their characteristic flavor from the roasting process they undergo after harvesting and cleaning. Despite being hulled, this process does not remove their bran and germ, allowing them to retain a concentrated source of fiber and essential nutrients. As a result, oats are an excellent source of carbohydrates, protein, and dietary fiber. They are also rich in beta-glucan, a soluble fiber that helps in reducing cholesterol, making them an ideal choice for health-conscious consumers.

The Indian oats story began as early as 2006 when Quaker launched its plain oats in the market, changing the perception of oats from being mere animal feed to a viable breakfast option. According to a recently published report by Bonafide Research, "India Breakfast Cereal Market Outlook, 2021," the oats market in India was projected to grow at a CAGR of more than 21% between 2015 and 2021. The growing demand for health foods, especially in metro cities and urban areas, has played a crucial role in the rising adoption of oats. The nutritional benefits of oats have been the biggest trigger for their acceptance, particularly among health-conscious consumers. Since oats are typically cooked by boiling them in milk, they align well with the Indian preference for hot breakfasts, further supporting their widespread consumption.

Quaker Oats, the world’s leading oats brand, entered India in 2006, followed by other key players eager to capitalize on the evolving breakfast habits of Indian consumers. Soon, companies such as Marico, Britannia, Kellogg’s, and GSK Consumer launched their own brands of oats. More recently, two of the country’s largest food companies, Hindustan Unilever and Nestl?, introduced oats under their Knorr and Maggi brands, respectively, as healthy extensions of their noodle segment. This rapid influx of major brands into the oats market is unparalleled in any other food category in India. The competition is still in its early stages, but as multiple brands strengthen their foothold, the market is expected to become even more dynamic.

Among different oat varieties, instant savory oats have gained more popularity than sweet oats, as there are already numerous sweet breakfast cereal alternatives available in the market. The most common form of oat consumption remains porridge with milk. However, the introduction of innovative oat-based products such as biscuits and noodles has made it easier for consumers to incorporate oats into their diet while ensuring a familiar taste and texture. Companies have also observed that the South Indian market, which accounts for more than three-fourths of the total oats consumption in India, was initially the primary focus. However, recent expansion efforts have aimed at increasing national penetration.

Despite its growth, the oats market in India remains under-penetrated, offering substantial opportunities for new entrants and product innovations. A significant portion of consumers purchase plain oats primarily due to medical recommendations or word-of-mouth suggestions as a healthy breakfast option. However, in the past few years, flavored oats have gained traction as consumers seek a balance between health and taste. Recognizing this opportunity, companies have introduced a variety of new recipes, unique flavor combinations, and regional adaptations to attract a wider audience. For instance, Quaker Oats' masala variant and Saffola's lemon-flavored oats have tapped into Indian taste preferences, demonstrating strong potential to deepen market penetration.

As awareness of the health benefits of oats continues to grow, brands that successfully combine nutrition with great taste will have a winning edge. With increasing product diversification, aggressive marketing, and expanding retail presence, the oats market in India is poised for sustained growth in the coming years.
