A turbocharger uses forced induction powered by the flow of gases to compress the intake of gases, forcing more air into the engine to produce more power for the vehicle. Until the late 20th century, the turbocharger was called a turbo supercharger. Turbochargers were first used in petrol engines in 1962, and from 1970 to 1980, many formula one racing cars were powered by them. Since its inception, it has transformed in shape, size, and power over the years. However, today, turbochargers are used in gasoline and diesel engines worldwide. The turbocharger engines are smaller in size as compared to other types but give more power output. For some years now, there has been a new type of electric turbocharger that uses electric boosting technologies that optimise its functions. These assist in delivering power at low speeds even when the turbocharger has not started working. Electric turbochargers have two segments: one with an electrically assisted turbocharger and the other with an electric compressor. They use either an electric motor or a compressor to give power to the engine. Electric turbos provide smooth and instant power, eliminating lags that are built to give performance. But, they don’t improve gas mileage as compared to traditional turbochargers and also don’t lower emissions. A traditional turbo engine reduces emissions by 23%, while an electric turbo engine only has up to 20% emissions reduced.
