The global venturi scrubbers industry covers wet air pollution control devices that use a venturi throat, a converging and diverging section in which gas accelerates to high velocity, to atomise scrubbing liquid into fine droplets that capture particulate matter and absorb soluble gases. As the gas and droplets slow down in the diverging section, particles agglomerate with droplets, which are then removed in a cyclonic or mist eliminator separator. Venturi scrubbers are especially effective at removing fine particles, sticky or corrosive dusts, mists and fumes, and they can simultaneously cool gases and absorb acid gases such as sulphur dioxide, hydrogen chloride and hydrogen fluoride when alkaline scrubbing liquids are used. Designs include fixed-throat, adjustable-throat, eductor or jet venturi, and multi-venturi systems, and they are often combined with packed towers or other scrubbers. Venturi scrubbers are used in chemical and pharmaceutical plants, metallurgical and smelting operations, fertiliser production, pulp and paper mills, incinerators, asphalt plants, mining and mineral processing, food processing and biomass boilers. Key suppliers include Babcock & Wilcox, CECO Environmental, which owns brands such as Kirk & Blum and Fisher-Klosterman, Ducon Technologies, Schutte & Koerting, Envitech, Verantis, Tri-Mer, MikroPul within Nederman, Croll-Reynolds, Wärtsilä for marine applications, GEA, Andritz, Sly Inc., Monroe Environmental, Hamon and many regional engineering firms, particularly in China and India.
Demand for venturi scrubbers follows industrial production, air quality regulation and investment in new plants. Tightening particulate and acid gas limits in China, India, Southeast Asia and Europe has driven retrofits at metallurgical, chemical and waste plants, while in the United States the EPA's 2024 amendments to the Mercury and Air Toxics Standards and other rules for industrial sources increased requirements, although the EPA proposed in 2025 to repeal the 2024 MATS amendments and reconsidered several air rules, creating uncertainty. Venturi scrubbers compete with dry technologies such as baghouses and electrostatic precipitators, which are often preferred for large combustion sources because they avoid wastewater, but venturi scrubbers remain the technology of choice for sticky, hygroscopic, explosive or high-temperature gases and for applications where gas cooling and acid gas absorption are needed at the same time. Growth areas include battery recycling and lithium processing, where acidic fumes and fine particles must be controlled, semiconductor and electronics manufacturing, waste-to-energy and hazardous waste incineration, pharmaceutical production, and biomass and biogas facilities. Consolidation among air pollution control suppliers continues, with CECO Environmental acquiring several businesses, including Profire Energy in January 2025, and Nederman expanding its filtration portfolio. Water treatment requirements for scrubber blowdown, energy costs from high pressure drop and competition from lower-cost Asian manufacturers are key industry issues.

Market Drivers
• Tightening Particulate and Acid Gas Emission Limits:Regulations limiting particulate matter, heavy metals, acid gases and fumes from industrial sources, including China's ultra-low emission standards for steel and other industries, India's emission norms for industrial boilers and thermal plants, the EU Industrial Emissions Directive and best available techniques reference documents, and US National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants, require plants to install or upgrade air pollution control equipment, including venturi scrubbers for difficult gases.
• Growth in Chemical, Metals, Battery and Waste Industries:Expansion of chemical, fertiliser, pharmaceutical, metal smelting and refining, lithium processing, battery recycling and waste incineration capacity, particularly in Asia, the Middle East and North America, creates demand for scrubbers that handle corrosive, sticky or hot gases. Battery recycling plants and critical mineral processing, supported by government incentives, require wet scrubbing of acidic and metal-laden fumes.
Market Challenges
• High Energy Consumption and Wastewater Generation:Venturi scrubbers need high gas velocities and pressure drops to achieve fine particle capture, resulting in high fan power consumption and operating costs. They generate contaminated scrubbing liquid that must be treated before discharge or recycled, adding costs and requiring compliance with water regulations. These factors make dry technologies more attractive in some applications.
• Competition from Alternative Technologies and Price Pressure:Baghouse filters, electrostatic precipitators, dry sorbent injection and other technologies compete with venturi scrubbers, particularly for large combustion sources. Low-cost manufacturers in China and India compete strongly on price. Corrosion and erosion of scrubber components require expensive alloys or linings and maintenance, and project demand depends on industrial investment cycles and regulatory enforcement.

Market Trends
• Hybrid and Multi-Stage Wet Scrubbing Systems:Suppliers increasingly combine venturi scrubbers with packed towers, wet electrostatic precipitators, quench systems and mist eliminators to achieve very low emissions of particles, acid gases and aerosols in a single system. Such systems are used at hazardous waste incinerators, battery recycling plants, chemical plants and semiconductor facilities. Integration with wastewater treatment and zero liquid discharge systems reduces environmental impact.
• Energy Efficiency, Corrosion-Resistant Materials and Smart Controls:Manufacturers are developing adjustable-throat venturis that maintain efficiency at varying gas flows, optimised nozzle designs and low-pressure-drop configurations to reduce energy use. Fibre-reinforced plastics, high-performance alloys and ceramic linings extend service life in corrosive environments. Sensors, automated controls and remote monitoring optimise liquid flow, pressure drop and chemical dosing and support predictive maintenance.
Segment Analysis
Fixed-throat and adjustable-throat venturi scrubbers account for the largest share of the market, while eductor venturi scrubbers and hybrid systems serve specialised applications. Fixed-throat venturi scrubbers have a constant throat area and are simple, robust and low-cost, suitable for processes with relatively stable gas flows, and they are widely used in chemical, mineral and metal processing plants. Adjustable-throat or variable-throat venturi scrubbers use movable plumb bobs, dampers or flaps to change the throat area, maintaining pressure drop and collection efficiency as gas flow varies, and they are used in incinerators, kilns and processes with fluctuating operations. Eductor or jet venturi scrubbers use high-pressure liquid to create the draft and move gas without a separate fan, and they are used for small gas volumes, hazardous gases and applications where fans could be damaged by corrosive gases. Multi-venturi or cluster designs use multiple small throats for large gas flows. Venturi scrubbers combined with cyclonic separators remove droplets and captured particles. Hybrid systems combining venturi scrubbers with packed bed towers, wet electrostatic precipitators or quench sections provide multi-pollutant control. Venturi quench systems cool hot gases before downstream treatment. Replacement parts, including nozzles, liners and mist eliminators, and retrofit services form an aftermarket segment.

Particulate matter removal is the primary application of venturi scrubbers, while acid gas absorption and combined multi-pollutant control are important additional functions. Particulate matter removal, including fine particles, fumes and mists from metallurgical furnaces, calciners, dryers, kilns and chemical reactors, is the main function of venturi scrubbers, which can achieve high collection efficiency for particles down to about one micron at high pressure drops. Acid gas absorption, using alkaline scrubbing solutions such as caustic soda, lime or sodium carbonate, removes sulphur dioxide, hydrogen chloride, hydrogen fluoride and other acid gases, often in combination with particle removal. Gas cooling and quenching reduce temperatures of hot gases from incinerators and furnaces before further treatment. Odour control removes odorous compounds from rendering, wastewater and food processing operations, often with chemical scrubbing. Removal of sticky, hygroscopic, flammable or explosive dusts, which would clog or ignite fabric filters, is a key niche. Removal of heavy metals, including mercury, lead and cadmium, from incinerator and smelter gases is another application. Recovery of valuable products, such as chemicals or metals in the scrubbing liquid, is possible in some processes.
Chemical and petrochemical, metals and mining, and waste incineration industries are the largest users of venturi scrubbers, while pharmaceuticals, battery recycling and food processing are growing segments. Chemical and petrochemical plants, including fertiliser, acid, chlor-alkali, pigment and specialty chemical producers, use venturi scrubbers to control particulate and acid gas emissions from reactors, dryers, calciners and storage. Metals and mining, including smelters, foundries, steel plants, aluminium plants, ferroalloy furnaces and mineral processing, use venturi scrubbers for fumes and dust that are difficult to handle with dry filters. Waste incineration, including municipal, hazardous and medical waste incinerators and sewage sludge incinerators, uses venturi scrubbers in combination with other devices to remove particles, acid gases and metals. Power generation, particularly biomass and industrial boilers, uses venturi scrubbers in some cases. Pharmaceutical and fine chemical plants use scrubbers for solvent vapours, dusts and reactive gases. Battery recycling and lithium processing plants are a fast-growing application. Pulp and paper mills use venturi scrubbers on lime kilns and recovery boilers. Food processing, including spray dryers, fryers and rendering plants, uses scrubbers for particles and odours. Semiconductor and electronics manufacturing uses wet scrubbers for process exhaust. Asphalt and cement plants also use them.
Carbon steel with linings, stainless steel and alloys, and fibre-reinforced plastic are the main materials of construction for venturi scrubbers, selected according to gas temperature and corrosiveness.Carbon steel with protective linings, such as rubber, polymer or ceramic linings, is used for many venturi scrubbers handling moderately corrosive gases, balancing cost and durability. Stainless steel grades, including 316L and duplex steels, are used for corrosive and high-temperature applications in chemical, pharmaceutical and food industries. High-nickel alloys, such as Hastelloy and Inconel, are used in highly corrosive environments, such as those with hydrogen chloride, hydrogen fluoride or chlorides at high temperatures. Fibre-reinforced plastic is widely used for acidic gases at lower temperatures because of its excellent corrosion resistance and lower cost than alloys, particularly in chemical, semiconductor and wastewater applications. Thermoplastics such as polypropylene and PVDF are used for smaller systems and highly corrosive gases. Refractory and ceramic linings protect venturi throats from erosion by abrasive particles and high temperatures. Material selection significantly affects capital cost, maintenance and service life, and suppliers offer engineering support for material choice. Spare parts and relining services form a recurring aftermarket.
