Embracing Organic Living: A Guide to Conscious Consumerism

Organic foods have been farmed or produced without the usage of any artificial chemicals, hormones, antibiotics, or genetically modified organisms. They are considered healthier as they are grown using natural products like organic fertilizers and manure like compost, vermin-compost, cow dung manure, etc. In addition to this a 'labeled organic food' is free of added preservatives like coloring, sweetener, flavoring, preservatives, and monosodium glutamate. The most commonly purchased organic products include fruits, vegetables, dairy products, grains, and meat. Nowadays many modern organic products have also found a place in the organic market; namely, sodas, cookies and breakfast cereals, pulses, tea, coffee, spices, etc. It is a widely known fact that organic products are an expensive option as compared to easily available and mass-produced non-organic food products, then why should one risk a dent in his/her budget and buy organic food? The obvious answer is the added health benefit. As the organic products are kept away from all sorts of artificial products and also the animals reared are not fed hormones or antibiotics; thus people, mostly children are less prone to diseases caused by the residue of chemical pesticides. Apart from this organic products are also believed to have more nutrients; nitrate concentration is also lower which reduces the risks of certain types of cancers. Unlike non-organic food, they do not contain hydrogenated fat which has been linked to causing heart diseases. These products are a preferred choice for animal lovers and environment enthusiasts as animals are fed a natural diet and organically grown products also prevent soil pollution, thus are environmentally friendly. The global pandemic has also played a major role in influencing the world is becoming more 'health conscious and this is reflected in the increase in demand for organic products. This being said, it must also be noted that contrary to the general belief that organic food does not contain any fertilizers, chemicals though minimal, are used to grow such products. Even health-conscious, people still refrain from buying organic fruits and vegetables as they are difficult to store with their short shelf-life. Organic products are still a 'luxury' to lower class and lower-middle-class families as they are expensive and comparatively less easily available. An organic product also uses an ample amount of water and thus is considered one of the main reasons for depleting water table. And in the end, evidence proving that organic food is more nutritious is also controversial thereby rendering it a less favorable option. It is not easy to distinguish an organic product from a non-organic product and many retailers take advantage of this to sell non-organic products at the price range of organic products in the quest to earn more profits. Even though upon an initial glance there might not be many benefits of choosing organic products over non-organic ones but a closer look will make one realize the importance and need to shift to an organic diet plan. There is an urgent need to spread awareness among people and motivate farmers to shift back to the conventional methods of farming.
