Skiing is a popular winter sport that is also recognized as a competitive sport by organizations such as the International Ski Federation (FIS) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The first skiers appear in cave paintings in Inner Mongolia's Altai Mountains, then in rock carvings and rune paintings in Scandinavia. The Finnish marshlands have been good at conserving skis, while even older skis can be found in Russia near Vis. However, the oldest and best were discovered west of Skellefteå, at Kalvträsk. Three old guys, Josef, Hugo, and Tyko, were digging ditches in a marsh when they discovered this pair of skis. On April 3, 1884, the first Swedish ski tournament was held in Jokkmokk. It is now known as the Red Bull Nordenskiöldsloppet, and it is still the world's longest ski race: 220 kilometers. Purkijaur to Kvikkjokk and back again. That first race was held because Baron Nordenskiöld needed to maintain his honor. In his notebooks from the Swedish Greenland Expedition in 1883, he wrote that two Sami men from Jokkmokk, Pavva Lars Nilsson Tuorda, and Anders Pavasson Rassa, had traveled 460 kilometers in 57 hours during Nordenskjold’s Greenland Expedition. The country receives a lot of snow, with official snowfall figures stating that the ground is covered for six months of the year (at least in the north). During February and March, an average of 3.5 inches (90 mm) of snow falls per day. Winters in central and southern Sweden are often short yet cold, with less snow than one might expect. In contrast, in the run-up to February, the north of the country receives substantially more severe weather and snow accumulation.

According to the research report “Sweden Ski Gear & Equipment Market Overview, 2028” published by Bonafide Research, the market is anticipated to witness a value addition of USD 13.16 Million market size by 2028. Increased government measures to encourage participation in outdoor activities such as skiing and other snow sports, as well as expansion in the number of ski resorts, are some of the key factors contributing to increased sales of ski gear and equipment across the region. In recent years, the number of women participating in numerous activities, particularly winter sports such as skiing, has increased globally. Women's ski apparel and equipment are being introduced by vendors. Though women ski at a lower rate than males, manufacturers are playing an important role in encouraging women by providing specialized equipment that is created exclusively for them with greater safety and comfort, such as narrow ankles and size disparities. Furthermore, significant vendors distinguish their solutions by dividing them into tiers such as intermediate, advanced, and professional. Coalition Snow, for example, is a significant vendor that manufactures women's outdoor recreational equipment such as skis and snowboards. As a result, the increasing adoption of ski gear and equipment by women signals a rise in market growth.

Sweden has about 100 ski resorts. Skistar Sälen, Skistar re, Skistar Vemdalen, Branäs, Idre Fjäll, Romme Alpin, Stöten, Kläppen, Tänndalen, Kungsberget, Hemavan, Ramundberget, Järvsö, Lofsdalen, and Isaberg Mountain Resort are some well-known ski resorts in Sweden. The largest ski resort in Northern Europe, it is one of Sweden's most popular. It is located in central Sweden, near the city of stersund, and offers a wide range of alpine sports and pursuits, with courses for all skill levels ranging from green slopes to the intense valley run with a length of 4 miles (6.5 km) and a vertical drop of 2,933 ft. (894 meters). The resort is divided into five important sub-areas: Duved, Tegefjäll, Rödkullen, Are By, and Are Björnen, which are normally open from early December until late May.

The Swedish Ski Areas Industry Association (SLAO) includes over 300 members who work in ski lifts, equipment rental, ski schools, and other ski-related enterprises. The goal of SLAO is for Swedish ski resorts to be safe and appealing, as well as for its members to receive ongoing education and assistance from the industry. During the 2017/18 winter season, SLAO members hosted over 2 000 000 skiers and employed around 13 000 people in all areas associated with the industry. Alpine skiing is one of Sweden's most popular sports. Stockholm has some fantastic winter resorts and is the perfect place to start for beginners. Alpine skiing provides some of the most magnificent vistas from the summit of the slope. Dalarna's largest ski resorts include Sälen, Idre Fjäll, Orsa Grönklitt, and Bjurss Säfsen. Aside from the lovely villages of Gislaved and Jönköping, the famed Isaberg Mountain Resort is a world-class skiing destination for young daring travelers.

According to a recent study regarding skiing popularity among Swedish people, the results were Throughout the entire mountain region, 80% of the winter visitors did downhill skiing, less than 30% did day trips on cross-country skis, and a quarter went snowmobiling. Despite an extensive trail and lodge system, only 2% of the winter visitors said they went on an overnight cross-country ski trip in the mountains (i.e., stayed overnight in a hut or lodge in the backcountry area while skiing). On the other hand, only 10% of the winter visitors did not ski at all. Further, downhill skiing tends to have the least diversification of all activities—47.9% of the downhill skiers said they only went downhill skiing. The next closest concentrated activity was day trips on cross-country skis, but no more than 14% engaged exclusively in cross-country skiing. Only 7% of the snowmobilers participated solely in snowmobiling in the mountains—74% also went downhill skiing, 32% did day trips on cross-country skis, and 23% participated in fishing. Moreover, region-wise visitors, Participation in winter tourism activities differ among the 4 mountain counties. In Norrbotten, participation is more diversified in all areas of activity. Only 50% of the visitors did downhill skiing, whereas 8% did overnight cross-country skiing. Cross-country skiing day trips and snowmobiling and angling were reported by 20–25% of the Norrbotten visitors, respectively. Västerbotten attracted a higher percentage of snowmobilers and anglers than the other counties (52%). Cross-country skiing day trips were also reported by 34% of the visitors and Visitors to Jämtland and Dalarna primarily participated in 3 different activities—downhill skiing, cross-country skiing day trips, and snowmobiling—with emphasis on the first. In Jämtland, 79% of the visitors participated in downhill skiing, and in Dalarna, the corresponding figure was as high as 87%.

Beijing 2022 was Sweden's most successful Winter Olympics ever in terms of both gold and total number of medals, breaking previous marks established in 2018 and 2014. Sweden won gold medals in six different sports for the first time at the Winter Games. Furthermore, the country earned its first (and second) gold medals in freestyle skiing, and first gold medals in speed skating since 1988, and became the first country to win medals in all three curling sports at the same Winter Olympics. Walter Wallberg, Sara Hector, Jonna Sundling, Sandra Näslund, Maja Dahlqvist, Maja Dahlqvist, Jonna Sundling, Henrik Harlaut, and Jesper Tjäder are the medal winners in the winter Olympics 2022 in Beijing, China.

According to a study on the effects of climate change on the skiing industry, the majority of ski slopes in Sweden do not already have the sophisticated snowmaking capability envisioned in this scenario, and financing the changes would necessitate large financial investment. Snowmaking as a climate change adaptation becomes less efficient as temperatures rise, as the equipment requires freezing temperatures to make cost-effective snow. As a result of progressive climate change, rising temperatures will lower the number of days considered efficient for producing snow and raise the price of producing essential snow. Furthermore, the Swedish ski industry's snowmaking infrastructure will need to be expanded shortly. A situation may occur in which the more southern territories, primarily Gotland, must determine whether increased reliance on this kind of climate adaptation is sustainable. These increases, as well as the associated economic and environmental implications, will put smaller ski areas out of business in a warmer climate. Not to mention that the anticipated improvements in snow production may impair the visual value of ski areas and, as a result, their attractiveness to visitors. Such issues could be investigated in future studies using novel visual tools such as virtual reality.
