The EU is formulating new EV battery regulations that are expected to be in place by 2023. The new regulation states new circular partnerships between battery manufacturers and recyclers. This would lead to an increase in the use of recyclable materials to produce new batteries, and battery passports would be introduced to ensure traceability. It will affect the designing, labelling, collection, re-use, and recycling of batteries throughout their lifecycles.
At least 50% of a battery's weight must be recycled, but from 2025, this will be increased to 65% for lithium-ion batteries and to 70% by 2030. Specific recycling requirements are expected to be introduced for each type of battery, like cobalt, copper, nickel, and lead batteries. The restraints to the market would place a burden on the recyclers to disclose the annual quantity of batteries they handle and recycle, along with the recycling rates of various materials extracted. Manufacturers would have to increase the number of portable batteries they collect by 45% by 2026 and 70% by 2030.
